Happy Birthday, Terry!

Happy Birthday, Terry!
Tom has always considered Terry as a brother.  They have always enjoyed their time together and "connect" on so many levels...finances, sports, education, cars, hunting, fishing and their love for the Lord.  Terry has been there for us since Tom has come into the family and nothing has changed since Tom's diagnosis in March.  Terry has stepped up to the plate and been a huge support for us, coming to the hospital over his lunch hour and then back in the evening too.  Helping here at the house and however he can is so appreciated.  We celebrated as best we could here at our house today.  Terry and Kelly picked up Chinese carry out and Kelly had baked a cake...mix it all together with 15 people and it's a party!
After lunch both Tom and I took naps (in separate rooms!) to try to make up for a lack of sleep our first night home.  I knew coming home would take adjustments, I just never realized how tiring it would be.  We definitely saw many hours on the clock through the night as Tom needed up to use the bathroom frequently...and it's quite a process!  To say the least I was exhausted in the morning.  We are so thankful to my brother and sister-in-love, Mike and Cheryl, for spending the night with us and being here to help with so much.  Cheryl fixed breakfast for us and we enjoyed fellowship around the table.  After breakfast we watched the church service from last Sunday at Grace, even though we miss the corporate worship we feel connected to our "body of believers" with the DVD's the church sends us.
Matt and Katelyn were able to drive down from Mt. Vernon to spend the day with us.  It is always special to have them here.
Hobie Raikes stopped by with early birthday wishes for Tom from a host of special friends...with balloons, card, excessively large cookie and gift cards to Lowe's!  Thank you to the Raike's, Snedecor's, Hassey's, Romanelli's, Todd's, Sander's and Severance Families.  THANK YOU!
Kelly, Sarah, Cheryl, Lauren, Morgan & Lisa
Last night while the boys were enjoying watching the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin (sorry Tim "B"), we girls piled into Tom and my bed to watch HGTV!  Yes, we are "one big happy" family...I think the communal living idea would work!  We are silly.
Today the Home Health nurse stopped by to meet us and get an assessment on Tom.  We will continue with the once a week nursing care.  Tom will also have physical, occupational and speech therapy here at the house.  I'm still not sure how often they will come, but we are so blessed to have Kay Scott (family friend) as Tom's physical therapist.  She will be here tomorrow to put Tom to work!

No Place Like Home

Fifteen days in the hospital was more than enough!  So thankful for a sunny, mild day to bring Tom home.  It was such a great sight to pull into the driveway and see Zac and Sarah raking leaves.  We welcomed Kay Scott, family friend and physical therapist, who helped us transition to home life.  I am so pleased that the car transfer went so smoothly.  I can't say that we will be making many trips, but when we do it seems like it won't be too bad.  Hopefully with each day, we will become more and more comfortable with our "new normal".
On Thursday Tom's temporary rental wheelchair was delivered.  It is a step above the one he had been using.  We look forward to getting the special order chair in a couple of weeks that will be a "Cadillac" compared to this one.
Also on Thursday I was "trained" in giving Tom his Lovenox shots.  These shots are given in Tom's belly and are to prevent blood clots in his legs.  I had no idea I would receive an honorary bachelor degree in nursing!  I think I have learned more in the last two weeks than in the last 20 years!  Not only have I earned a nursing degree, but also feel certified in speech, occupational and physical therapy!
Tom's night nurse on Thursday came in on Friday morning before she left to say good-bye since she wouldn't be back before Tom went home.  It was so encouraging to have her give us a hug and let us know how much she enjoyed caring for Tom and I think I saw some tears in her eyes!  We are so blessed by the love and care Tom received from all of the staff on the Acute Rehab floor.  We especially enjoyed getting to know Tracy (speech), Katie (physical) and Jennie (occupational) therapists who are using their gifts from God to help people.
On Friday the therapy team planned special Fall Festivities for the rehab patients.  It was so fun to watch Tom play the games and win one of the competitions!  The highlight of the day was having the children from the daycare center at the hospital come through the rehab unit dressed in their costumes and each of the patients handed out candy to them.  Tom's face lit up as the kids came by and he was able to give them a treat.  Once again I forgot to take pictures.
Friday much of the last minute details of the house remodel were completed along with a crew of friends and family who came to clean!  I was greeted Friday night with the fresh smell of clean...love it.
The hospital bed, along with several other specialty equipment needs, was delivered and set up prior to our arriving home.  Once set up the delivery man then realized the motor on the bed was not working!  He had to go back to the warehouse and come back to put a new part on the bed.  It now works beautifully and will make Tom's home life much easier.  My sister has been the "gopher girl" going and shopping for the many needs we had.  Some of the items she was able to get:  extra long twin sheets, extra long mattress pad, waffle crate for the bed, extra long shower curtain, shower rings, towels, and I'm sure many things I have forgotten.  Not only did she shop, but she then prepared dinner for all eleven of us who were here to share dinner with Tom.
It is a little overwhelming sorting through the medications and remembering when Tom is to take them.  I am so thankful to all the family who are here to help me with the transition.  My sister-in-love, Cheryl, will be here for the week getting us into a routine and helping with the nurse's role.  She is incredibly organized and she will also help with the organization of our home.  I still have not changed out my closet from summer to winter clothing and I look forward to getting that done.  My brother, Mike and brother-in-love, Terry, were able to get a bed set up for me so I can be with Tom.  They also made a run to the grocery store and Home Depot to pick up some last minute items.  We all are feeling like we could jump into the "communal living" idea!  We just plain enjoy being together!!
Last night the nurse said Tom was up five times.  He had two bowls of cereal and a yogurt at three in the morning because he was hungry and couldn't sleep.  I told him starting tonight he will be on a new schedule...no night nurse to bring him whatever he wants!  He has had such a hard time sleeping at night, we are praying that now he's home that that will change.  I told my mom that I feel like I've brought a newborn home from the hospital and I need to get his days and nights back on track.  The nurse told me not to let him sleep this afternoon and that would help him sleep better tonight.  I sure felt badly when I woke him up when he feel asleep in his chair.  You should see "his chair"...it is a throne!  We took bed risers and put under it to raise it to a better level for him to get in and out of.
The home health nurse will come on Sunday to see how we are doing and then therapy will start on Monday.  There is no rest for the weary, but we are so thankful to be at home and receiving loving care here.
We pray that you will be refreshed in God's presence as you worship Him on the Lord's day tomorrow.

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God."
Romans 5:1-2

Cross: Special Reminder

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
I Corinthians 1:18

Riverside Methodist Hospital
If this hospital was being built today, I assume much more thought would probably be put into whether or not they would put this cross at such a predominate place on the side of the hospital or if it would be used at all!  As I drive into the hospital in the early morning and leave late in the night...this is the sight I see.  I believe God placed that cross there just for me to remind me of His suffering, His compassion and His presence.  As I checked my e-mail this morning I had received this from Anne Marie Weakley:

This is an excerpt from the chapter entitled 'The Furnace of Suffering' from a book called 'The Greener Grass Conspiracy.'
"Run to Jesus and unburden yourself at his feet. Lay your griefs upon his chest and let him bear the weight. Let the Man of Sorrows strengthen you in your sorrow. He can prop your head when you are suffocating in sadness. He can strengthen you when you are emotionally and spiritually spent. Call out to him for light in the midst of darkness. Call out to him for strength in the midst of weakness. The one who suffered knows exactly what you need.
The counsel and care of others, while helpful and necessary, is not the ultimate solution. Jesus is the one who gives strength and contentment in the midst of suffering. Cling tightly to Jesus, who already has you in his invincible grip."

This morning on the front step of the house I found a gift.  A beautiful, fall wrapped, gift of goodies for Tom...specialty popcorn, peanuts, jelly beans and chocolates from Tom & Patti Sweigard!  What a special treat that Tom will enjoy and hopefully share with me and our many visitors!
Another gift that Tom received this week is the New Mexico Lobos Nike Dri-Fit shirt he is wearing in the above picture.  Thank you to Mark Lawrence and his high school buddy, Steve Alford, who is the head coach at UNM for this treasure...Tom is now a proud UNM fan!
Today Tom met with Rob Jones from Columbus Medical Equipment.  Rob is a wheelchair specialist who fit Tom for his new wheels.  The process reminded me a lot of buying a car!  I wondered if we could trade-in Tom's Bonneville for the wheelchair...unfortunately not.  So many options...he wanted to know if Tom wanted the treaded tires and I asked, "do you think we'll be 4-wheeling?"...who knows where this wheelchair will take us.  I'm praying that he will be walking again before long, but until then we'll enjoy the "off road" options!

Maintaining...

Life continues in the Rehab Unit here at Riverside.  We continue to remain positive and encouraged, not only with therapy for Tom but with the cards, food, prayers and love from family and friends.
Our hearts ache for others who's lives are hurting.  People here at the hospital along with friends from church are experiencing the pains of this world.
Yesterday, Tom had a group therapy session with the neuro-psychologist...oh boy, I still can't believe this woman gets paid for sitting and stirring conversation!  Tom kept pointing toward the door and I knew he wanted to leave.  Tom said, "Jesus", looked at me and wanted me to continue his thought...share Christ.  With as much confidence as I could muster I shared that we believed in the God of the Bible, we have an eternal hope and that our life here is short.  We know that nothing has come into our lives without being filtered through the hands of God and He would see us through.  When I stopped to take a breath, Tom said "good bye" and pointed to the door.  I politely excused us and we left the room!  When Tom and I got back to his room he just shook his head!  Later the same evening our family prayed around the dinner table here in the rehab dining room and another patient stated that it was very awkward for him to have to hear us pray like that in public!  Believe you me that we sense Satan is alive and well.  We know our God has already won the victory and our light shines bright in the darkness.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Tom and I both are so encouraged to know that the SOS (Serving Our Savior/Serving Our Staff) team at Worthington Christian is hosting a dinner and entertainment, Dave & Dwayne, for the High School staff tonight.  Tom and I just wish we could be there, but that would mean someone else would be here and we don't wish this on anyone.
We are sad knowing that Tom's parents will be flying back to Orlando on Thursday.  There will be a huge void at our home and in our hearts as they leave.  I am thankful that Zac and Sarah will be home on Thursday night so I won't be coming home to an empty house.
The house is moving along...it's amazing to come home each night and see the progress and amazing work that The Jae Company, Gossing Construction, Finish Line Construction, Mann Plumbing, Weakley/Kraynak Painting and the help of physical therapist, Kay Scott, and job foreman...Elden Deskins!  We are so appreciative to all who have been a part of this project.  As soon as the house is finished and the equipment we need in place we will get Tom home.  Each day gets a little closer and Tom's anticipation grows.  Thursday will bring more therapy, a visit from a wheelchair specialist (did you think that Tom, all 6'7" of him, would fit in just any wheelchair?) and we will practice transferring Tom from the wheelchair to car and then car to wheelchair.
Tom & Tom Weipert
Tonight Tom had a visit from a high school friend, Tom Weipert.  Tom lives in Wyoming, Ohio near Cincinnati.  It was fun to hear his stories from their high school days.  He brought well wishes from all the class of 1980, Westwood High School, Unincorporated Fulton County, GA (Atlanta).

Happy Birthday Cherith!

The youngest Anglea grandchild is Cherith Lynn Anglea.  Her name comes from the Bible where a beautiful stream near Jericho is named Cherith.
"Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan."
I Kings 17:3
Cherith loves to bake.  She has entered several of her treats in competitions and fairs with honors!  Tom and I wish we lived closer so that we could benefit from her kitchen endeavors!  I had the fun of teaching Cherith how to bead and make some bracelets over Christmas...a special memory together in South Carolina.  Cherith has the amazing opportunity of spending her 15th birthday in the Bahamas!  She, along with her parents, are going to visit missionaries that their church has sent out.  We pray that her birthday is one she'll never forget with seeing, hearing and tasting a new culture where Jesus name is being proclaimed.
We love you Cherith!
Cherith with her sister, Leah

Thought for the day:
There is no greater mercy that I know of on earth than good health except it be sickness; and that has often been a greater mercy to me than health…
It is a good thing to be without a trouble; but it is a better thing to have a trouble, and know how to get grace enough to bear it.” ~Spurgeon
God has given us grace for each day.  I am so thankful today for a sabbath rest and I know Tom is thankful for a "day off" of therapy.
"Aunt J"
My Uncle Jim and Aunt "J" came to visit on Friday.  True to herself she came in a "get up" to put smiles on Tom and my faces...it worked.  Isn't she hilarious?
Big accomplishments today for ME!  I am quite proud of myself for learning how to transfer Tom from the bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to bed, wheelchair to toilet, and toilet to wheelchair!  We both were glad when neither Tom nor I ended up on the floor.  My back is in tact and I'm realizing I need to get in better shape or Tom needs to regain his mobility or I'm going to be in great need of a good chiropractor!
MVNU Men's Basketball Team
(This was the placemat under our dinner plate...I hung one in Tom's room & on his door in the hospital)
Last night God saw me through a tough evening.  I am so appreciative and thankful to my parents for attending the MVNU "Meet the Team" banquet last night.  What a special evening it was gearing up for the upcoming basketball season.  We also appreciate Kent Homoelle and Rick & Ethan Burby for being there to support Matt.  I can't say that I was excited to attend without Tom...these are his specialties...Matt, basketball, good food and fellowship with like minded basketball "junkies".  God is good and I didn't even cry, though I wanted to.  It was fun for me to meet Mya Moore...Coach Matt and Anna Moore's precious new baby daughter.  She was born last March when Tom was in the hospital the last time.  Mya joins her big sister, Makenna, and they are their daddy's biggest cheerleaders.  I want to thank Bob and Kelly Hinkle for their prayers and Kelly's good hug, for Mark and Marsha Zeltman's prayers and table fellowship, and for Matt who loves his dad more than anyone.
Papa, Matt & Granny at MVNU "Meet the Team" Banquet
Last night while I was away from Tom he received the best care from Sarah & Zac, Pops & Granny, Terry & Kelly and a host of other family members!  I was confident leaving him in good hands.  Zac and Sarah came into town on Friday and had to be back in Indiana for church today.  It was a quick trip for them but we are so thankful for even the little bits of time we can get with them.  We praise the Lord for His watchful hand of protection over them as they are putting many miles on their car.
Tom and I will enjoy worship from his hospital room watching the CD of last weeks sermon.  Matt took Tom's parents to first service at our church this morning.  We will all meet back up together here at the hospital for lunch.
"Therefore, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing to Him."
II Corinthians 5:9
Encouragement from Matt!
He loves good ol' gospel music!

Rain, Rest & Rehab

The "three R's" of the day...rain, rest and rehab.  Tom is back in "school" as the student learning many new things.  He is a model student giving 110% with great patience, persistence and prayer.  Hard work has always been a part of his "chemistry" and this is what will make for great progress in this steep climb.  We are so grateful for the compassionate and loving care of the therapists here in the Acute Rehab Unit.  As I drive home at night from the hospital in the rain and awake to rain pitter pattering on the window I'm reminded of God's presence because He is the Maker of the rain.  Listen to this song and get a fresh perspective of rain:
Last night Cheryl had the idea to order Tom a World Series snack...Jet's Pizza! Tom's parents agreed and the three of them made it happen.  The steroids Tom are on have given him an enormous appetite.  I believe yesterday he had two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and 3 pieces of pizza!  He is being weaned off the steroid and hopefully this will also curb his appetite.
Enjoying the ballgame & pizza too!
Tom's new 'temporary' address
Most of you would know what a "hat trick" is...but do you know what a "pillow trick" is?  Before I go to bed at night I take all the decorative pillows on our bed (which usually go on the floor) and place them neatly on Tom's side of the bed.  I have awakened several times in the night seeing the pillow forms thinking I had a dream and Tom was right beside me.  I reach out, touch the pillows and realize the snoring sound I heard was unfortunately coming from the dog.  Rats...I don't like tricks...pillow tricks and a snoring dog!
While I'm on a kick...something else I don't like...seeing the arithmetic mistake on my husbands stat board!  This is my brother Mike pointing out the error.  Tom being the "math guy" that he is, we decided not to point it out to him!  I do believe he would have checked himself out of the hospital.
My sister-in-love, Cheryl, went back to Akron today.  She will be back in Columbus on Sunday with my brother...boy, will we miss her.  Tonight the grandparents are traveling together up to Mt. Vernon to watch Matt play basketball in the MVNU Blue vs. Green scrimmage.  Tom and I are so thankful they can go and support Matt when we can't be there.  It is a hard thought to grasp that we can't go and certainly pray that Tom will get to other games.

Rehabilitation

I forgot to mention that Dr. Zerick met with Tom and I on Monday evening to see how we were doing.  Prior to his coming I had put in a worship CD that Anne Marie Weakley made for us.  There was a sweet presence of God in the room.  When Dr. Zerick came in he sat down in a chair in the room and just said how sorry he was that Tom had lost the use of his right side.  He proceeded to say he had no indications as to whether Tom would be able to regain that movement.  He tried to encourage us that he would do whatever he could to prolong Tom's life.  I shared that only God knows the number of our days and Tom agreed.  We shared with him that our prayer is that God will use this to bring God glory and hoped he could see a glimpse of God through us.  Dr. Zerick said he has never seen a patient loved so much.  I agreed!  It was a special moment as the three of us cried together and let the pain release through the tears.
Pray for Dr. Zerick's Salvation
Tom started today with a full schedule of rehabilitation.  He receives 6 half hour sessions of speech, physical and occupational therapy a day.  He is exhausted.  We are asking that if you are able to come for a short visit that you would make your visits between 6 and 8 p.m.
