Tom woke up on Monday morning with a small rash on the upper left side of his lip. We didn't think much of it. However, on Tuesday it was spreading and looking a little worse. By Wednesday we knew this wasn't looking good but Tom insisted it was "just a rash". Thursday morning his whole lip and left side of his face was extremely swollen and the rash was blistering and spreading toward his eye. A call to our family physician made us realize we should have called sooner. Anyway, we ended up at the doctor's office with an official "shingles" diagnosis. No, these aren't the shingles on our roof, but a painful, chicken pox related virus that follows a nerve. We are keeping a close watch so that it doesn't go into the eye...pray...it's awful close. And his left eye is his "good eye". Tom is currently on two antibiotics trying to combat this at full force.
Please pray that God's timing regarding the next chemo round will be clear. Tom was to start his third round on Monday, however with the shingles diagnosis we will wait to see the oncologist on Tuesday (due to the Labor Day holiday) to see where Tom's blood counts are before proceeding with the chemotherapy...it may be delayed.
Even with this "bump" in the road we are excited that we get to have Sarah home tonight and Saturday! Zac is playing golf on Saturday in Ashland with a group of guys for a bachelor pre-wedding outing. So we get to have Sarah all to ourselves to spoil and enjoy. We will miss you, Zac.
No pictures...Tom wouldn't let me take his with the way he is looking now.

Oh...I am so sorry to hear that Tom has shingles and will surely pray that it stays away from his eye. I hope that having Sarah home will bring a little joy to his situation. Shingles can be very painful and will pray for the antibiotics to kick into high gear. Love to both of you.
Sorry friends that you are suffering this bump in the road. Continuing to pray for God's hand on Tom. Love you both.
Tom! I feel for you!! Just had shingles this summer. I had to put off shoulder surgery because of it. Mine stayed on the upper right side of my body. It felt like a really , really bad sunburn. Last year I asked for the vaccine for it and they only give it to people over 60 so I couldn't get it. Now I think they give the vaccine to 50 and up. I plan to get the vaccine and hopefully not get it again. I'm thinking of you and saying a prayer that you can get rid of it fast.
Love you all,
Paula
